OFTEN ONE OF LIFE'S HAPPIEST OCCASIONS

There are many reasons that people adopt, and adoption can be a happy experience for both parent(s) and the adoptive child.  Alternatively, it can be perilous to adopt a foreign child who has been neglected or a child whose parents have had difficult issues like drug addiction.  The decision to adopt is one that needs to be made with great care and full knowledge of possible consequences.

Adoption cases may be contested or uncontested.  Either way, Freedman Law, P.C. can assist you with the numerous technical requirements. In the case of a minor, these requirements include preparation of a medical history for the child, obtaining a putative father affidavit and undergoing a home study by a child placement agency or the Indiana Department of Child Services.  Consents to the adoption may be needed from the biological parent or parents.

Contested adoptions can be similar to child custody cases.  Please see the discussion of child custody found here. Sometimes, multiple parties will compete for the same child.

Adult adoptions can be a very happy experience for all involved, and are generally simple and straightforward cases. This is because the adult “child” can consent to his or her own adoption.  Again, Freedman Law, P.C. can assist you in getting it done right.
